Adam H Sobel, professor of applied physic and Applied Mathematics and Earth and Environmental science at Columbia University, New York, credits an Indian author Amitav Ghose as an inspiration for him. His paper on 'Tropical Cyclon Hazard to Mumbai in the Recent Historical Climate ' is very much inspired by an email, which Ghose has written in back 2015. In that email, Ghose talks about the possibility of a cyclone in the Indian Ocean and the possibility of its landfall on Mumbai. This work is followed by Sobel's book-'Storm Surge: Hurrican Sandy, Our Changing Climate, and Extreme Weather of the Past and Future', which is based on the disaster faced by NYC.

Recently, Sobel was delivering a guest lecture at Divecha Center for Climate Change (DCCC) at IIS (Banglore), pointed out some of the instances where thousands of people died, and how this affected a nation economically. He advocated that India must acknowledge the loss faced by NYC when it was hit by Hurricane Sandy, and pointed out the precautions which India could consider. He told in an interview that both NYC and Mumbai had much in common, and the latter had much to learn from NYC'S experience with Hurricane Sandy. Sobel said, "There is a need for an emergency plan for the city... although it need not top the list of things to do, but there needs to be a good plan."
