The Sahitya Academy Award is an Indian literary award presented annually to an author for their "outstanding contribution towards literature". The award is bestowed only on Indian writers writing in Indian languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution . It consisted of a citation plaque, a cash prize of ₹1lakh.


Seven poets will be given the award —


  1. Phukan Ch. Basumatary (Bodo): He is an associate professor in Bodo, whose area of interest in language and linguistics. He has written many works in which some provide a lasting effect. His first book An Introduction to the boro language deals with a structural analysis is done based on different linguistic levels .i.e phonology, morphology, vocabulary. His other important work Boro and Rabha: two Tibet-Burman languages of northeast India based on his researches and findings that both Tibeto-Burman language and north-east Indian language are genetically related.
  2. Nand Kishore Acharya (Hindi): a renowned Hindi poet who is very famous for his own distinctive voice in literature. he is currently a professor of eminence at IIT Hyderabad. His most famous poems are Jal Hai Jhan (1980); Wah Ek Samudra Tha (1982); Shabda Bhule Hue (1987);  Aati Hai Jaise Mrityu (1990); Kavita Mein Nahin Hai Jo (1995); Hote Hue (2008).
  3. Niba A Khandekar (Konkani): he mainly writes in Konkani, which is written in five scripts: Devanagari, Roman, Kannada, Malayalam, and Perso-Arabic.Because Devanagari is the official script used to write Konkani in Goa and Maharashtra, most Konkanis (especially Hindus) in those two states write the language in Devanagari. 
  4. Kumar Manish Arvind (Maithili): he is a supaul(Bihar) litterateur cum poet who mainly writes in the Maithili language. He has been selected for this award on his Maithili poetry collection.
  5. V Madhusoodanan Nair (Malayalam): an Indian poet and critic of Malayalam literature, who is credited in popularizing poetry through recitation. He is best known for Naranathu Bhranthan. He is also a recipient of many other honors including the Sahitya Akademi Award, Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram, Padmaprabha Literary Award.
  6. Anuradha Patil (Marathi): she is mostly famous for her Yantchi poem collection.
  7. Penna Madhusudan (Sanskrit): the author is dean, faculty of Indian philosophy and culture at k. Kalidas Sanskrit university Ramtek. His notable works are The Yoga Upanishad's (Sanskrit Text with the commentary of Sri Upanisad Brahmayogin, English Translation, Notes, and Index), Sri Kavyakantha Charitam, Indian Philosophy ( Samkhya, yoga, vaisesika, Nyaya, and Vedanta )


Four novelists will be given the award


  1. Joysree Goswami Mahanta (Assamese): Wife of former Assam Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, a Member the Rajya Sabha and Padma Shri (2018).
  2. L Birmangol Singh (Manipuri): He belongs from agartala.he is famous for his novel Ei Amadi Adungeigi Eethat
  3. Cho Dharman (Tamil): He is famous for his work sool.
  4. Bandi Narayan Swami (Telugu):  he is a story writer and novelist from Anantapur district. Famous by the name of 'Swami'. He wins this award for his novel Septabhoomi.


Six authors will get the recognition in short story category —



  1.  Abdul Ahad Hajini (Kashmiri): He is one of the most famous poets of Kashmir. He was also one of the pioneers of the modernist movement. He is often referred to as John Keats of Kashmir, as both Keats and Azad wrote modernist poems and both died in the early forties.He dedicated most of his poetry to Allah (God.), and through his poems, he wanted to create sensibility and to develop consciousness among people.
  2. Tarun Kanti Mishra (Odia): He is the winner of the Odisha Sahitya Academy award and Sarala Award for his contribution to literature. He authored a novel against the backdrop of Dandakaranya, a vast territory inhabited by immigrants of erstwhile East Pakistan and a large tribal population.
  3. Kripal Kazak (Punjabi): Punjabi University, Patiala, acknowledging his contribution, had appointed him a professor in literary studies ignoring the fact that he is not even a matriculate.
  4.  Ramswaroop Kisan (Rajasthani): He is a renowned short story writer of Rajasthani literature. he has written famous stories like Bareek Baat and Sapnai Rau Sapnau (short story).
  5.  Kali Charan Hembram (Santali): His book comprises 15 short stories in Santhali language describing the struggle of tribal people and human relationships.
  6.  Ishwar Moorjani (Sindhi): she is famous for her short story Jeejal.

Three authors will get the recognition in non-fiction, autobiography and biography category —



  1. Shashi Tharoor (English): Tharoor, who is a Congress MP wins this award for ‘An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India’: Britain left India about 70 years ago and with all the resources of modern technology India could have solved its problems of poverty long ago, instead of being the world's greatest reservoir of human misery. The British did a lot of good in India and in their empire, as well as a lot of evil. This book deals with the miseries the Britishers planted.
  2. Dr. Vijaya (Kannada): wins this award for his autobiographical novel Kudi Esaru.
  3. Prof Shafey Kidwai (Urdu): He is a bilingual critic, scholar and communication expert Prof Shafey Kidway of the Aligarh Muslim University. He wins this award for Sawaneh-e-Sir Syed: Ek Bazdeed’, which is based on Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of AMU.
